Many people confuse bodyguards with security guards, but their roles are very different. Knowing the difference helps you book the right service — and avoid paying for what you don't need, or worse, getting less protection than you do.
Security guard: protecting a place
A security guard protects a fixed site — a company gate, mall, bank or villa — monitoring access, screening, registering visitors and reporting risks.
Bodyguard: protecting a person
A bodyguard protects a person and moves with them, planning routes, reading crowds, handling intruders and securing car drop-offs and public entrances.
Key differences
- Focus: the guard on the place, the bodyguard on the person.
- Mobility: guards are mostly static; bodyguards move with the client.
- Training: bodyguards need advanced training in situations, formations and first aid.
- Interaction: bodyguards deal directly with clients and guests, requiring more tact and discretion.
When do you need both?
At major events both work together: guards secure the venue and entrances while bodyguards escort VIPs. Companies may need permanent site security plus a bodyguard for the chairman on the move.
